A Plan for Replacement, Rehabilitation and Strengthening of 200 Water Facilities till 2050

·         In the light of the ministry’s continuous efforts for developing the water facilities built along the Nile and its branches to make the optimal use of the water resources needed to achieve a sustainable development, the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation,       Dr. Mohamed Nasr El-Deen Allam stated that the final arrangements are made with the African Development Bank in preparation for signing the agreement of the two-million-euro grant provided by the Bank. The preparations are intended to formulate a general plan for the main hydraulic facilities on the Nile, ryahat and main canals in Egypt in the framework of studying the replacement, rehabilitation and strengthening of over two hundred facilities within a time frame extending to 2050.

·         His Excellency stated that the Ministry is about to complete the construction of Al-Rayah Al-Tawfiqy new head regulator and lock in next February with a total cost of nearly 43 million Egyptian pounds, where the project implementation percent is 94%.

·         On the other hand, Dr. Allam indicated that a number of meetings were conducted with representatives from the German Construction Bank and the project’s consultants to discuss the replacement and strengthening of Al-Ibrahimiya Canal head regulator. It serves a command area of 1.6 million feddans in Asiut, Al-Menia, Beni Sweif and Al-Giza governorates according to the consultative services contract related to the project of constructing Asiut new barrage and its hydroelectric station. The latest developments regarding the current status of the feasibility study of Deirot barrages executed by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency were also reviewed.  

·         On his part, Dr. Allam stressed that the Ministry spares no effort to achieve the optimal use of the water yield to fulfill the requirements of the different sectors in the country, meet the demands of a comprehensive and sustainable development through the application of a systematic group of national projects in the field of replacement and rehabilitation of grand barrages and water facilities on the Nile, its branches, rayaht and main canals in addition to bridges and high ways facilitating transportation among governorates and establishing stations for generating clean and environmentally-friendly hydroelectric power.
