Edfina Barrage and Navigation Lock Rehabilitation Project
Rehabilitation and upgrading of one of the important hydraulic structures on the Rosetta Branch of the Nile, supporting the operational efficiency of the barrage and navigation lock and the continued performance of the water management system.

Edfina Barrage on the Rosetta Branch
The Edfina Barrage is located at kilometre 210.00 on the Rosetta Branch of the Nile. It was constructed in 1948 to replace the earthen embankment that used to be built across the Rosetta Branch after each flood to prevent seawater from entering the river channel and to avoid the risks associated with constructing this embankment.
Following the construction of the High Aswan Dam, the barrage became important for managing excess water, regulating water levels, and supplying the canals branching off upstream while maintaining their required levels. These include the Mahmoudia Canal, the Eastern and Western Rashidiyya Canals, and the Bahr El-Saidi Canal.
Purpose of Barrage Rehabilitation
Given the importance of the Edfina Barrage, reinforcement and maintenance works have been carried out on its gates and structural components, together with the mechanical and civil rehabilitation works required to maintain operational efficiency.
Maintaining the hydraulic structure’s efficiency and ensuring the continued performance of its operational functions.
Enhancing the operational efficiency of the barrage and navigation lock and maintaining the facility’s readiness.
Maintaining operating equipment, movement systems, and mechanical components.
Reinforcing and maintaining the gates and components of the barrage and navigation lock.

Rehabilitation and Maintenance Works
The project included a comprehensive range of civil and mechanical works, as well as maintenance and rehabilitation of the barrage and navigation lock components.
Mechanical Works
Comprehensive maintenance of two counterweight hoists, diesel engines, and all operating equipment for the main gates and the sluice and side gates, together with rehabilitation of movement systems and supports.
Navigation Lock and Steel Bridge
Rehabilitation, treatment, and maintenance of lock dewatering boxes; repair of horizontal and vertical cracks in areas affected by water seepage; rehabilitation of the lock’s steel bridge and rotation system; and maintenance of mechanical equipment, the operating unit, and the system’s locking mechanism.
Barrage and Gate Works
Cleaning, painting, maintenance, and lowering of the Edfina Barrage gates; supplying new steel plates, angles, and beams to replace damaged components; maintaining the upstream parapet covers; and rehabilitating the navigation lock’s main gates, sluice gates, and side gates.
Roadway and Bridge Works
Repairing asphalt joints on the roadway above the barrage, carrying out reinforced-concrete repairs, supplying and installing new steel sections, laying a new asphalt layer at least 5 cm thick, and strengthening and rehabilitating the downstream walkway.
