Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia concluded a new round of ministerial discussions regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) in Addis Ababa on the evening of September 24<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The spokesperson for the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation disclosed that substantive progress was not made during the most recent round of negotiations, as Ethiopia remained opposed to any compromise solutions or internationally agreed-upon technical arrangements that would accommodate its pronounced\u00a0GERD-related interests without compromising the rights and interests of downstream countries.\u00a0Ethiopia also retracted from some\u00a0prior understandings that had been reached between the three countries during the negotiation process, he added<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The spokesperson emphasized that the Egyptian negotiating team remains committed to constructive negotiations governed by clearly defined objectives. According to him, the primary objective is to reach an agreement governing the filling and operation rules of the GERD that safeguards Egypt’s national interests, protects its water security, and preserves its water uses, while promoting the interests of the three countries, including Ethiopia’s stated interests<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The spokesperson\u00a0reiterated\u00a0the importance of demonstrating the required political will and seriousness to expeditiously reach a legally binding agreement on the rules of filling and operation of the GERD, within the time frame agreed-upon by the three countries, in accordance with the outcomes of the meeting between the leaders of Egypt and Ethiopia on July 13 of this year.
