Achievements of the Dams and Major Barrages Sector during 2025

The main tasks of the Dams and Major Barrages Sector include the construction of new barrages on the Nile River, its 2 branches, the main rayahs, and major canals, as well as the construction of their appurtenances such as navigation locks and movable bridges, and the strengthening, maintenance, and restoration of elements of major water structures for 81 barrages, and the overhaul of existing navigation locks on the Nile River, its branches, rayahs, and major canals.
In addition to updating the operating systems of barrages, locks, and movable bridges above them, and improving the electrical operating efficiency of barrages. The sector’s engineers and technicians also operate the major barrages on the Nile in Upper Egypt along with their navigation lock appurtenances, which are: Esna New Barrage – Nag Hammadi New Barrage – Assiut New Barrage.
The sector continuously carries out maintenance work on the main barrages located on the Nile River, rayahs, major canals, and dividing barrages with all their components (gates – cranes – chains – operating devices – underwater photography – internal and external boreholes in the structure – grouting works – restoration) to ensure the optimal operation of all water facilities.
The Dams and Major Barrages Sector has prepared a strategic plan for the replacement and renewal of major water structures on the Nile River, its branches, rayahs, and major canals. This plan is periodically updated to contribute to making decisions regarding the replacement, renewal, and maintenance of various barrages. The sector’s officials prepare feasibility studies, design studies, designs, as well as specifications and contracts for new projects and implement the necessary maintenance works for existing barrages.
The Dams and Major Barrages Sector also carries out environmental studies accompanying the projects being implemented, such as environmental monitoring works for the project to construct the new Dirout Barrages group, which includes monitoring groundwater levels, noise levels, air quality, vibrations, securing the work environment, and training on occupational safety works.
Among the most prominent works recently completed are the study, qualification, and efficiency improvement of 16 barrages in various governorates, as follows:
